Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) was recognized in France as the leading composer of his day, with his music bridging the end of romanticism and the modernist movement of the early twentieth century. In his monumental work Requiem, presented at the Tyler Civic Chorale’s annual masterworks concert, Fauré refutes the gloomy tradition of funereal organ composition, replacing a fear of death with what has been called instead, “a lullaby of death . . . a happy deliverance, an aspiration.”
